First described in 2011 when Reginald Pocock 1901 genus Pterinopelma was revalidated after it was considered synonymous with Eurypelma by Eugène Simon in 1903

Large arboreal species that can obtain a leg span up to 7  inches or possibly more

The genus Guyruita was established in 2007 and means to go under rocks that was derived from the language of the Brazilian Tupi Indians. The species name cerrado comes from the type locality in the Brazilian savannas.
